Batik is a traditional craft practiced throughout many countries in Asia and Africa that requires immense skill. The artist hand paints the design with melted wax using a sharp pen and then the fabric with the wax painted areas is dyed in a color bath. The resisting and dyeing cold include multiple steps depending on the intricacy of design and the number of colors being used. This piece was made by a renown batik artist in a workshop in Rajasthan who employs local low income Muslim women to help them earn a livelihood.
